Overview Echinacea is one of the most popular and well-researched therapeutic herbs available today. Echinacea is related to the sunflower family and is the top-selling herb in the United States. There are nine species, but only three are used medicinally; Echinacea angustifola, Echinacea purpurea and Echinacea pallida. American research has focused on Echinacea angustifola, whereas European research has focused primarily on Echinacea purpurea. Native Americans have used Echinacea to support healthy immune function for hundreds of years. There is a large body of scientific evidence that supports the fact that Echinacea is beneficial to the immune system; and supports production of white blood cells. Clinical studies also show the benefit of using Echinacea extract to lessen the severity and duration of colds and flu, possibly shortening them by 1-4 days. In addition, clinical trials also indicate that Echinacea may be effective in prevention and treatment of upper respiratory tract infections. The known active compounds unique to Echinacea are polysaccharides and phytosterols to mention a few. The plant portion used from Echinacea is the root and leaf.
It is recommended to use Echinacea periodically for only two weeks at a time because it loses its effectiveness if used continuously; the effectiveness is restored in another 1-2 weeks.
